Jessica Marie Bugbee
Yoga Teacher, Veterans Yoga Project
Jessica Marie Bugbee served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant, E-6. Her Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) was a 68W, healthcare specialist, rather a medic, or “doc”. She served in the units of the 82ND Airborne Division, the 10TH Mountain Division and the US Army Reserve’s 411TH Engineer Brigade. Jessica spearheaded The Surge into Iraq in 2007 (15 months), Operation Iraqi Freedom, and The Surge into Afghanistan in 2010 (365 days), Operation Enduring Freedom. Jessica was presented with fine opportunities while serving her country, and she was not shy to take the challenge. A few of the many jobs Jessica had throughout her seven year active duty service: Operations Sergeant, Combat Lifesaver Trainer, Unit Movement Officer, Forward Treatment Team, Mas-Casualty Team, Quick Reaction Force Team, medical Platoon Sergeant in 3-6th FA unit, 10TH MTN DIV Army Ten Miler DIV Runner, Battalion/Brigade Medical Special Operations. Acknowledgements Jessica received: Bronze star in combat (Afghanistan), Combat Medic Badge, Expert Field Medic Badge, Australian Parachutist/Parachutist Badge…
Jessica thought she had a plan when she left the Army in 2011, but she did not…
Jessica struggled in isolation after leaving the Army as a decorated medic – making many of the wrong decisions for herself; she was struggling not knowing how to respond to the triggers of PTS(d), MST, domestic violence, anxiety, substance use abuse… She proclaims it was meditation that saved her life. She believes in military veterans helping each other; she says it’s her duty now – to SERVE her TRIBE. “We are kindred spirits – no words need to be spoken; we know one another, we feel one another, we see one another, we hear one another, we breathe one another, WE ARE ONE ANOTHER.” And, she believes VYP creates a community of acceptance: no matter where you are at – there is a space to do, be, heal, grow!
Jessica serves as the NY Area Manager for the mid-Hudson, a co-facilitator for the Mindful Resilience 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training and a lead facilitator in training for the Mindful Resilience Compassion Fatigue. Jessica’s introduction to Veterans Yoga Project was during her 300 hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2018, as a one-off workshop taught by President of VYP, Deb Jeanette. The culmination of Jessica’s 200h and 300h YTT’s, teachings within the United State Military Academy at West Point’s Yoga Club and her diverse roles within military life led her to co-Found the 501(c)3 non-profit ,TRIBE, we Teach Resilience, Increase Balance & Endurance, with the guidance of Phoebe Miller of nOMad, always at OM.
Since Jessica attended the Mindful Resilience for Trauma Recovery, she knew VYP, too, was her TRIBE. She believes everyone desires community – which is why when we leave the military, we struggle if we do not have it.
Jessica currently is working as a veteran peer advocate and the Wellness Director for the Hudson Valley National Center for Veteran Reintegration, where she is empowered to use all her skills – community, nature, movement, storytelling and the breath, which are her personal pillars. She is an Experienced 500h Registered Yoga Teacher threading these pillars towards the surface to guide her community to seek that which is within them already, prana – the life force energy… “there is no need to go towards the external – once you YOGA, or rather yoke – bring together, the physical body, breath, mind and spirit – you are whole, you are ONE – WE ARE ONE!”
