Deann Borshay Liem

Deann Borshay Liem has over twenty years experience working in development, production and distribution of independent documentaries. She is Producer, Director and Writer of the Emmy Award-nominated documentary, First Person Plural, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and aired nationally on PBS/POV; In the Matter of Cha Jung Hee, also on PBS/POV; the award-winning Memory of Forgotten War (PBS 2015); and Geographies of Kinship (America Reframed in May 2022). She served as Executive Producer for AKA Don Bonus, for which she won an Emmy Award, as well as for Kelly Loves Tony, On Coal River, Ishi’s Return, and Breathin’: The Eddy Zheng Story. She has contributed as a consultant, story editor and producer on numerous documentary projects including Special Circumstances, Burqa Boxers, Mimi and Dona, and The Apology. She was the former director of the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) where she supervised the development, distribution and broadcast of new films for public television and worked with Congress to diversify public media. A former Sundance Institute Fellow and a recipient of the 2018 Women, Peace and Security Fellowship from the San Francisco Film Society, Liem is the Director, Producer and Writer of the new documentary, Crossings, about women peacemakers advocating for peace on the Korean peninsula.
